# B3ta Art Auctions - Feedback please

Having just finished the last picture request and popped it in the post, I have been thinking about the success of the last and possibility of future B3ta Art Auctions.
The main problem is getting enough B3ta people together to hold a live auction, so I've been thinking about the best way to do virtual ones.
And because it obviously is about this place as much as anything I thought it best to get opinions from you lot.

Assuming it follows the same rough concept, People donate art, we auction it off, all the money goes to charity... what do you think would be the best way of doing it?

1 - Use Ebay, I've set up an account for this, but have stalled because of the cons...
Pros - it's a good system that clearly works, that most people know and trust, and anyone can bid from anywhere
Cons - They take 10% of the sale price, plus Paypal fees etc, some people don't trust it.

2. Do it all myself via gaz with a similar system as before (you name your highest bid for a lot and then I work out who has won at what price)
Pros - no fees, all goes to charity
Cons - a lot of work for me, some people may not trust me, which is fair enough, I have a beard.

3. Fuck off, this isn't what B3ta is about

Please answer honestly below, cheers.
B3ta Art Auction - Feedback

Feel free to add any other ideas/abuse

2 hours in and it seems in first past the post voting that twice as many people would rather not see b3tan art being sold to raise money for starving puppies with herpes (and a third more under AV :D)

Cheers folks, I'll knock it on the head/take it elsewhere :)

# I would suggest opening it up to other charities;
perhaps a different charity per auction if it goes ahead.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:11, archived)
# doesn't look like it's going ahead for any charity right now :D
never mind, all those cancery babies probably deserved it
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:12, archived)
# those cancery babies do have other charity funding options available, which is nice
b3ta is shits 'n' giggle mainly, trying to mix charity with Maddie and 9/11 Jokes (et al) is a little 'square peg in round hole'-esque.
If it does happen, then the newsletter is the best place for spamming it via eBay or wherever.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:15, archived)
# absolutely, hence 3
I don't want to annoy the majority of b3ta users, even if it does cure aids
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:17, archived)
# if that's the case, then I'd suggest showing this to /talk, /links and /ot
at least that way, a majority of b3ta gets a say, and can have an input :)
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:19, archived)
# does it not make more sense to only ask the image appreciating public?
I assume people who don't partake of the image board are doing so because they're sick of the sight of our scribblings, and quite unlikely to want to buy one of them.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:23, archived)
# there are people who use all boards
and if you truly want the majority of b3ta to have a say, you need to ask them.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:25, archived)
# but if they are viewing here/using all boards
then they will see this?
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:26, archived)
# I'm just suggesting that if you want the majority of b3ta to have a say
it's down to more than just regular users of one particular board. You may get more support from /links, /ot etc. than you realise.
Who's to say b3tans who don't post images may not be willing to buy one from those that do? Even those who don't visit here all that often.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:29, archived)
# I'm not suggesting regulars should be choosing
I just think that the image board contributors and viewers may be best people to ask about something done on the image board. In much the same way as while I do look at the talk board and comment rarely I'm not going to tell them how to do stuff on there :)
There's nothing stopping them popping over here and having a vote. I just don't want to go over there, say the wrong thing and cause all of them to come and click the fuck off option in response to me accidentally pissing them off.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:33, archived)
# that's fair enough, but it's then just a /board event, not a b3ta one.
also makes it appear very 'cliquey'
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:35, archived)
# fuck off with the cliquey thing, please, I'm genuinely tired of that word being thrown around here
it's not, its for everyone with an interest, or if the majority want it to fuck off, then that's what it will do
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:36, archived)
# well, that's told me then.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:37, archived)
# Nah I certainly know a fair few /linkers who are decent sorts, and just don't post that often here because they don't have the time/inclination/skillz to muck about with images.
Can't really testify to /talk (without goping down the obvious cliche road of /talk-dissing) or /ot since I don't really frequent...

it will needs input of all for charity suggestions, then a separate poll every time to be impartial. I'd suggest the 'artwork' is prepared (and displayed online here somewhere) before the charity is decided/announced
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:24, archived)
# I would say the other way around
some people may only want to donate artwork once they know who they're giving it away for.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:26, archived)
# and vice versa, others may not want to donate 'artwork' if their charity isn't picked...
it's a fickle thing
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:27, archived)

and all the suggestions go in a poll.

I think it comes down to how much time you have to do it yourself.

If you feel you have the time, then the extra 10% + will always be a bonus to any charity.

If you dont have the time, then use eBay.

Anyway, now I have to make a mask, and re-brand myself Captain Obvious

# Ebay allows people outside the b3ta community to put bids in and has a chance to raise a shed load of extra cash
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:14, archived)
# 1 - keep it infrequent - these things get quite tired quite quickly if overdone. Once a year would be good 'cos it would focus people towards the occasion. 2 max imho.
2 - involving the community in the selection of the beneficiary will help stimulate interest in it
3 - Ebay is very impersonal, but does have various advantages in terms of security and making sure people pony up once they've bought something
4 - combining it with a IRL event like a bash is good - gets people together, sense of occasion, plus there are opportunities for spin-off things that generate a bit more bunce for the organisation in question

So I'd say - combining some kind of live action auction type thing, with a sealed bid-type gaz setup would be favourite.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:20, archived)
# oh god it wouldn't be more than a couple of times in a year I imagine
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:24, archived)
# I think there's a good argument for linking it to bashes, personally.
The London one's obvious, and maybe the Derby one if that still operates in a post-Jessie world :o(

Gives a bit of a focus to the thing before everyone starts getting leathered, and more of a buzz to the acutal auction.

And also, I can FAR better imagine my chances of getting a pass-out from the missus to go to a bash if I were saying I was going to 'a Charity Art Auction' as opposed to 'Getting Pissed With A Bunch Of People From The Internet'
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:28, archived)

will result in drunken bidding and people having to say "sorry I can't pay what I said, what did I say anyway?"

# If you're selling for charity
eBay credit back any listing and selling fees to the same percentage you donate.

i.e. if 100% goes to charity, you claim back 100% of the fees.

eBay would also mean you can gift aid the donations.

I'm not sure how it works with Paypal fees. Presumably if you are donating 100% of the proceeds to charity then you won't incur Paypal fees as the money won't be coming to you, it will go to the charity through MissionFish.

# Charity is bollocks.
I realise I may get flamed for this, but I am fed up with having to support pet causes becuase insufficient government funding goes their way.
I don't understand why every pub I go to has a whip round for little Timmy to get some useless cancer treatment in America because NICE has looked at all the available evidence and pronounced it witchcraft. Buy him a fucking bandana and a trip to Disneyland, whilst shutting your mind to the 40,000 children who die every singe day through lack of access to food and clean water.
NSPCC. A charity not to help children but needed to PREVENT CRUELTY to them has no government sponsorship; RSPCA has a royal seal of approval and government funding to make sure my meat has a happy life.
Charity? Fuck it.

BTW; I would happily pay large sums for some of the artwork I see regularly here; I would also pay for permission to put some on t-shirts (even though I could copy it and get it done for free) The artists could then decide whether to keep the cash or give it to little Timmy.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:34, archived)

# My 'tuppence' worth on this is the following
The Auctions should only happen at B3ta bashes, such as (for example) The London bash (or whatever looks to be the biggest bash over a 12 month period). This gives it a focus and people can actually do the bidding / socialising thing all at once.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:38, archived)
# You leave your tuppence out of this, madam.
But yes.

Also - this year's was a bit off the cuff. Very successful, like, but a bit more advance planning could have seen some of the serious heavy hitters of b3ta come up with some bespoke pieces of the auction, and generate even further interest. Maybe get some of the old school re-engaged.

A one-off DTH or IVV for example, would probably go for a fortune.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:41, archived)
# I am in accordance with ^this^ man
Plus, If I do produce something specifically for an auction at a bash, then I might ACTUALLY get to attend one of the blooming things.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:46, archived)
# To be fair
the auctions items were largely won by people who had gazzed their bids rather than those in the pub.

The raffle was great though. I won a Game Boy.
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:42, archived)
# So
perhaps we could auction raffle tickets!
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:43, archived)
# but this does narrow down who can bid/buy
might be worth combining fleabay/online auction with the bash.

That way everyone gets to bid, outsiders from b3ta can also see the pics and bid and no drunken bidding

Then buyers can collect from the bash or get the pic posted out
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:43, archived)
# 1. use ebay - it's already a trusted and useful tool
2. if you can't get 100% fees back through their charity scheme, then you will probably bring in enough money to mitigate this anyway

3. Publicising an auction can be done in sigs, existing threads, b3ta calendar, newsletter, Facebook, Twitter and countless other ways

4. This may even bring more people to b3ta

5. This could bring more work to those of you who draw/paint/design/illustrate/animate for money

6. B3ta is as b3ta does - fuck the trolls

7. Profit!

# I like the ebay idea as it gets b3ta pictures into the outside world
(, Mon 6 Jun 2011, 15:56, archived)
# I think people should individually post their artwork for charity auction on /board without fear of being called a spammer
together with their charity choice and suggested price
The winning bidder sends a cheque (payable to charity) to the seller and gets the art

I know this will only work up to 2015 when cheques will all be scrapped

That being said it would probably be best if it were part of a bash, eg the London Bash and one of the Christmas Bashes.

From a bidder's perspective, I'd be quite happy to see it work through eBay or through gazzing, but from the organizing side of things I can imagine that side of the even would be manic and time-consuming... Would it be possible to split the task over 5 trusted (!) b3tans? Bids for artworks 1-5 gaz to User1, 6-10 to user2 etc etc?

Unless you really have nothing better to do with your life, use eBay and make sure the charity is registered with them to get fees back. I'm fairly familiar with their charity setup - I did a few auctions for Oxfam when I worked for them. I'd suggest having a single page, hosted ay on b3ta, with an overview of the item for sale and a link to the relevant eBay auction.

And do you want to limit the publicity and artworks to just b3tans? We could certainly publicise the event to other internet communities (reddit, Fark, etc.). It may be possible to rope in other artists (comicbook artists, etc.) to provide stuff for sale too.

# Woah huge post so hope you get down to read this...
Subject to Lord Rob's approval - you could combine it with a weekly image challenge. As well as clicking "like" people could use the thread to bid!!

No subject - people just post what they want to sell for the CST

Probably a shit idea but it could run for a couple of weeks or even more?

Edit; It would also be very "non labour intensive" - people just bid and, if they win, send the money just like with the last one.

Click for bigger (492 kb)

Pepe De La Soto is the devilish identical twin brother of Philbert De La Soto, the Brooklyn-based founder of Buff Babies, Inc. After his expulsion from mime school for smashing the invisible glass box of a fellow classmate, Pepe quickly fell into a life of crime and trickery. To date, he has successfully stolen 87 identities in 62 countries—including those of Al Sharpton, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Don Cheadle and Pol Pot—to name a few. Pepe is also wanted for software piracy, war crimes, loitering and aircraft hijacking. His last confirmed sighting was eight months ago in Guam, where he was masquerading as a brilliant Chinese physicist.

Can anyone help answer me a couple of questions:

1: Need to make a credit sequence for a DVD ending, suggested best software for said purpose?

2: Best entry level Chroma key, Greenscreen software for a newb.

# OmniGraffle
and Excel.

# Hm, when I've had to do credits sequences I've used a combination of After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere
This is one of mine: vimeo.com/20832773 (skip to the end, obvs)

# Re credits, I figured it would be a combination of software (one of those above I annoyingly don't have)
Ta for the answer though.

# If you have a program that does text animations, it should be pretty easy
I did credits for my b3ta video on Premiere 1.5 just by listing the names in a text box and having it roll from the start-point to the end-point.

I don't know for sure, but I reckon some older versions of Premiere will be available on the cheap.

# I've got a 5+ year old copy of Premiere on the shelf, I'm gonna give it a punt in that.

think it's done with Add Title...

I'll have a look later if you're having problems, but got to go to work now.

# I did a bit of stuff on AE with greenscreen using the Keylight plugin
quite user-friendly for a beginner and I think the most recent AE has it built in.

I found that the main thing with keying is to get the lighting right, otherwise it's a fucking nightmare. I couldn't really make it work until I used 4-point lighting: Keylight, fill, hair and background... but I think it's possible to make it work with 3-point. It's helpful to have the background as smoothly and evenly lit as possible.

# I presumed it wasn't going to be 'easy' but it's starting to look like such a frikkin ball ache to do (and get right)
That I suspect I'm just gonna pay someone to do it for me.
