This is a link post Another shooting in Merika.
Noone killed this time (except the gunman), but three injured in a hospital in Alabama.

If only the patients had been armed. Because nothing screams safety like terrified and confused people with guns.

UPDATE: This is worth reading, from what is - for my money - the best blog in the world (and certainly the best blog written by octogenarian grandmothers): margaretandhelen.com/2012/12/15/guns-do-not-kill-people-they-make-it-easier-to-kill-people/

But there's not much to it. Man goes to hospital. Man has gun. Man shoots people. Man is killed by police.

Oh, yeah - let's not forget the other shooting in Oregon on Tuesday: www.oregonlive.com/clackamascounty/index.ssf/2012/12/clackamas_town_center_shooting_1.html - you know, the trivial one.

Now I consider myself, much to Enzyme's, chagrin, as being on the libertarian right wing. I believe that for as long as the 2nd amendment is in force, it should be obeyed and respected. However, I do not support the amendment myself. I feel that it should be totally repealed as it has no practical relevance to the modern world. I support the right of the American states to make any laws against weapons(though not the US Federal Government.
If anyone starts the "2nd Amendment didn't cover private citizens just the millitary" balls, I'll expand

This is a normal post I wonder if there is any research into what motivates these people to commit murder.
At some point the killer must feel that it is the only option to go guns-a-blazing and have nothing to loose. I suppose that this could be a long time in advance and give them time to think through the kill fest. It would be interesting to gain an insight into the route to the act.

is doomed before its introduction; the genie is already out of the bottle. if any gun laws required the surrender of now outlawed arms, only the law abiding would comply. the criminal fraternity would not, so many would argue they need to retain their arms to protect themselves against criminals. it's too late unfortunately, although why automatic and semi-automatic weapons were ever legal is beyond my ken. it is also too late for us (UK) to start driving on the right, which is a shit comparison, but it's all i've got.

How did banning automatic weapons and hand guns work out in the UK?

(, Sat 15 Dec 2012, 17:32, , Reply)
This is a normal post oh yeah...
i remember well when the UK decided to ban outright handguns post Dunblane, even though their ownership was already extremely strictly regulated. i felt then, as i do now, that a total blanket ban was a knee-jerk over-reaction made by fools who believe that they can legislate against the dark side of human nature. it didn't work out particularly well as guess what, some people don't give a shit if is a handgun is illegal or not, and many handguns continue to be used to wound and kill, so it didn't solve the problem.

as for the banning of automatic weapons, i don't remember that, because it never fucking happened, because they were never legal in the first place.

If guns are made illegal, ie hard to get hold of them, you will reduce these problems. Gun crime will still happen, it's inevitable, but making them less available helps to control them against pointless misuses (a 6 year old child finding his parents guns and shooting his brother dead for example)

This is a normal post No.

But getting guns out of reach is a big mission that requires hard action.

This is a normal post i thought the guns used in this shooting were held legally.
A gun ban might not remove all guns from criminals immediately - although the number in circulation would inevitably drop over time - but it would make it a lot harder for mentally ill people to get their hands on them.

i'm glad we have very tight gun laws in the UK, but people still get shot here quite often, plus three massacres in my lifetime. i just think that it's a change that will never come in the US for historical, cultural, political and practical reasons. any significant change is destined to fail in a similar way to prohibition, which is a shit comparison etc etc

This is a normal post I think an interview with a local firearms officer on application of a firearms license
and subsequent evaluations over a certain time period, much like we have in the UK, would be a better proposition than a blanket ban.

This is a normal post it's a large industry, a ban will never be allowed

Talking of erasing scintillating memories, I'd almost forgotten about the shilling until I saw my hand this morning

also "I'd gonna kill you" ;)

This is a normal post aren't there countries out there which also have lots of guns
but dont generally use them for mass murder? There's no doubt people do this kind of shit because its easy, but I'd be interested to know why they want to do it at all.

This is a normal post The Swiss
Once you turn 20 you're conscripted and are given a gun to keep at home.
Most of the population is conscripted into a peoples militia when they become adults.

Up until recently you were also give a sealed box of bullets in case the country was invaded whilst you were away from base.

After 10 years (or 14 for officers) you are deemed to have done your duty but are given the chance to keep the gun downgraded from automatic to semi.

They have a bit of gun crime but not at this level.
Could be the discipline and training from conscription stops people going on sprees or weeds out those that are nutters.

A gun is not an inherently evil machine just as a knife or a car.
The problem is the power that can give someone who has the notion to do evil.

I think there's other countries with U.S level of gun ownership too like Canada but I don't know enough about them.

[edit]
Maybe it's because i'm getting older but I like the swiss model.
They don't pick fights with anyone and people leave them alone because they're all armed to the teeth.
They also have placed explosives on strategic bridges, roads and tunnels in case of invasion.
