If he wants the union jack to stop being a racist symbol he should fly it proudly, and encourage other non-racists to do the same. It's not the fact that the BNP fly the flag that makes it a symbol of racism, but the fact that nobody else is willing to.
To change the design is to admit defeat and shame and hand victory to the BNP along with an officially sanctioned racist badge. Yeah - really progressive.

you should suspect that you're wrong really.
The Union Jack was redrawn 200 years ago to include the following:
St. George's cross - a red cross on white to show England
St. Andrew's cross - a white cross on blue background to show Scotland
/EDIT: St. Patrick's cross - a diagonal red on white background to show the then subjugated Ireland, so now by inference the six counties.
St David is not included, as his flag is a YELLOW cross on blue - not black as I'd previously typed.
Yup, I fecked it up first go! :)
That mrflag.com is no help though. >

maybe, the addition of the black to the union flag, is not just to represent the multi-cultures in the UK, but also to keep the welsh happy as the black is on The St Davids Cross.

St David's cross is a yellow cross on blue background tho - so unless yellow gets put in they're still getting shafted.
And for the record, I think the welsh dragon is very cool - and a nice counterpoint to St George! :)

might want to get the white cross left out as well - let's face it running NI costs the UK how many hundreds of millions a year, the Irish government knows that if they had to reabsorb it, costs would spiral and taxes would change, noone too happy...
So basically no bugger wants it as long as the Unionists are runnign around with murders and punishment beatings cos the media lets them away with everything, and inciting violence with marches, and meanwhile the shinners refuse to 100% acknowledge that politics should be the seperate alternative to violence and they're still sending the ra-heads over to places like columbia to help export the violence - for a fee mind...
Get them off your flag and let them sort themselves out I say.
As long as innocent people are being killed for outdated beliefs and inground heirloom ideals, I say stop giving them attantion and let them figure it out autonomously. It'd be liek if Trolls on the board were ignored, excpet with a slightly higher chance of them gettign a regime change from the states... :)
This comment should not be taken too seriously - yes I know there's more to it. I think everyone 'cept the unionist thugs and IRA apologists are just tired of the violence! >

I noticed the article about the Union Jack being redesigned. Although I'm only American, I saw a similar controversy a couple years back when there was all the fuss about Georgia and the Confederate flag, which also dealt with multiracial issues. Ultimately we learned that small gestures towards some kind of reparations don't solve real problems, however noble, and it's so much less trouble if the whole issue is avoided.
Bearing that in mind, and if you don't mind an outsider's perspective, I think I can offer a solution. Here is a potential new flag design for a country that means to celebrate its heritage in all its diversity and still embrace cultural change; a token of good wishes to one's fellow man that does not pander to jingoism, liberal or conservative.

Now, it's easy to say that this is in fact the Brazilian flag, and admittedly there's Portuguese on it, which I understand is not the English national tongue (English) by a long shot. But I feel that the subtle, symbolic, and humanistic adjustments I have made sufficiently speak of English pride, felt by all its peoples both in its long and proud past and in the here and now. That, and Brazil is a neat place with good music and funny parrots and the Carnival, plus it was a good movie with a catchy theme song. It's just such a nice flag, and it seems to work for them, so what harm would one more do? Just my two cents. Thank you.
BTW If you let us adopt you as a commonwealth, you can have Texas and its flag. We'll hand over Bush and you can do as you please with him.

the government just recquisition those paint scanner bastards from homebase, scan everyone's colour in and change the flag reflecting everyone's colour...they could update it every month and we'd never have to sit through another one of those fucking boring homebase "we've got colour scanner" adverts...
