# Iv'e made a water mark....

just re-size to your liking!

# that's right, isn't it?
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 14:30, archived)
# it's right because people use it
but some would say the "of" is redundant and disrupts the flow of the sentence.
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 14:31, archived)
# actually
"from" would be more correct

"taken off b3ta.com without permission" would be even better, although that raises the issues of the internet being public domain.

in fairness, from the articles i've seen posted on here they always reference b3ta, and
often reference the posters, so the problem's not the same as it was with emap/bauer since they went out of their way to remove the tags etc.

EDIT: wait a minute, what the fuck am i doing playing devil's advocate to the scum??? fuck em up!!!!

We'd be no better than the Americans

There are conventions in written English which are followed for a reason by a, sadly, diminishing minority. In a matter such as this, it is more effective to use proper English than colloquial English.

# Yeah...
but where did the b3tards steal their source images from?

It's a different situation when a completely original work is taken and used for commercial gain without permission, but most of the pictures in the sun were photoshops of stock images/stuff found on the net.

If you don't own the original picture you are shopping, then it's a bit hypocritical to accuse the Sun of stealing your work.

Did you ask the Sun if you could use their logo for your picture there?

But you're right, of course
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 15:22, archived)
# You have a point
However, when commercial usage comes into it, then the issue gets pretty muddy.
As far as I see, in this case no-one from B3TA set out to make financial gain from their images.
But The Sun is maximising its profit by using free images.

The Sun's ratecard for a full colour page advert is over £55,000.
The paper rakes in over £1.7 Million in cover price on a Saturday.
Obviously, they buy in editorial images and pay their journalists.
But they are getting in editorial on the cheap AND they claim copyright on the images on their website.
It's something that can't just be ignored.
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 16:18, archived)
# when I create an image for commercial use,
I pay for all the photography used which means the profit is very little.
When I'm doing something for my blog or b3ta then I adopt the traditional b3tan model :-)

# You would have less sugar
if you consider the sugar to be one flowing item, like a liquid. If you were referring to the individual sugar grains, you would use fewer.

I don't make the rules, I just have to slavishly insure that everybody else follows them ;)
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 12:23, archived)
# Ahh. But it brings up the old philosophical issue:
I have a pile of sand (or sugar, I suppose but what the hell am I doing with a pile of sugar for fuck's sake?!) and I remove a grain from the top of the pile.

I continue to remove grains from the pile, one at a time; at what point does it stop being a pile of sand? When one grain is left? 10 grains? There is no real distinction between masses of things and groups of things.

but there is a difference in everyday language.

If I ask a greengrocer for a bunch of grapes and he hands me a single grape, arguments about philosophy are not going to make me buy it.

[edit] On reflection, i think what you have identified is simply vague language, rather than any philosophical idea. A 'pile' of sand is a relative term which may mean something different to everyone, whereas 'ten tons of sand' is a specific value that there can be no doubt about.

It is not size dependant, you can have less of anything or fewer of anything.

Less sugar or fewer grains of sugar, fewer shoes or less shoe.

# I had some shoes that fell apart

"Use fewer to describe countable things. Use less to describe uncountable quantities, collective amounts, and degree. These terms are not interchangeable."

It is number dependant, not size-dependant. Or dependent. Whatever.
(, Sun 31 Aug 2008, 12:31, archived)
# No, it is not number dependant.
If there are so many it is a bitch to count then it is still countable.

You never have less grains of sugar, no matter how much sugar there is, yet you have less sugar, even if there is only 1 grain left.

10 items or less is quite clear - it is 10 items or less than 10 items.
less fewer.

for instance, insurance companies and the like who often deal with technical jargon that those outside the industry don't understand. That is a good case for making an effort to word letters and documents in terms their customers will understand.
