Good plan!
Two months in my job left, then I'm off to the Netherlands (Might Nibus), where I shall be lecturing kiddles in esoteric subjects, which sounds like a whole heap more fun that what I'm doing right now.

I shall be being a social worker for a couple of months
before getting (hopefully) paid to do a Masters in clinical psychology for children and young peoples. I've been doing neuroscience research for the last 5 years, and although it was interesting, the futility of it all became far too much to bear. Research without practise makes Jack a very dull boy.

Blimey,
sounds like an interesting time ahead. And yes, I've got a friend doing a theoretical physics PhD. I understand her research topic, I just don't see the point of measuring what she's measuring the way she's doing it because the experiment could never actually be done. Theory is a weird thing.

yeh, I kind of lost interest in the last year of the phd.
my problem was the idea of just doing research, analysing, writing and publishing, then starting again. I get why people do it, it just feels like a huge amount of work for not very much return other than a name on a paper. I don't think my chosen subject has an influence on the lives of anyone except desperate academics or students, looking for a paper to cite. So, a change will do me good. All the best with your change and moving over there.

Er, the arc you get from two points on a sphere is the same wherever on the sphere it is, yeah? As long as the points are the same distance apart.
So just take a normal equilateral triangle, bend all the lines into the same arc. The lines are still exactly the same length away from each other on the spherical plane as they were on flat plane.

Why Crowe? Why?
Couldn't they have got someone English? It's just because his name will - and it will - bring in more money. That aspect of the movie industry really annoys me. Sorry. Good anim, though.

So we should recast Hugh Laurie's role in House then?
Though I have to admit that I found it a little odd that they got a Chinese girl to play the role in Memoirs of a Geisha. You can't tell me they couldn't have gotten a good looking Japanese girl for the role.

saw it last night - thoroughly enjoyed it
his accent did sound a bit Irish at times, but then people of that time were all mixed up from all over the country and he had just spent 10 years on the Crusades with celts, picts and english of all varieties, so I'm happy to defend it. the film is a cross between Gladiator and Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, but is nice n pithy and some good historical references. It's not like any other Robin hood type film I've seen before. It's kind a of a prequel to the traditional Robin hood ironically I also saw Cop Out afterwards, and there is a teddy bear in it just like that one.

/\ this
as part of the film is about him learning/remembering where he came from and he'd been in the army for years his mixed up accent makes sense, but it is irritating for the first hour and a half the history is a little messed up in terms of chronology but on the whole I really enjoyed it, and I'm a Nottingham lad

It's hilariously poor in some places.
Generally a good standard of hollywood historical actiony thing, but occasionally it has a sudden and lurching segue into monty python. And some scenes make no sense. Why the fuck does Marion turn up at the end with a load of orphans on shteland ponies? What, she rode all the way from Nottingham with them, in order to throw a load of kids with sticks into an actual war? What kind of mentalist cunt is she? Or is she just trying to get rid of them?
