I think Hitler was essentially

a brilliant man. His motives for his people were nothing but good and in a time when the nation state was still very important ( and don't forget that Britain was at the arse end of a time when it had essentially run roughshod over most of the known world in a bid to be the dominant world force ) he was trying to bring back what he perceived ( in many ways correctly ) to be a great nation that deserved to be in better shape as it had been in the past.
Many of his ideas for this were of course flawed and in order to mobilise a very demoralised and beaten people then there needed to be a scapegoat. People of the Jewish faith provided this because they were as always the financiers of modern Europe and when many Arians were starving it was inevitable that Judaism would be a prime target.
This was nothing new and not something Hitler was responsible for. many sectors of society in many countries shunned the jew for much the same reason.

Hitler's radical answers for fixing this problem were not of course the way to go but don't forget that when Hitler decided on his invasion plans he did so with the understanding that Britain, being the closest thing to Germany in terms of people and politics, would join him in the endeavour so as to split Europe between the two powers. Hitler was always known to have been utterly perplexed as to why Britain would actually stand against him as he held this country in the highest regard.
Hitler was an outstanding politician. He was not much of a military tatician but he did have an eye for good men and put together an army that was better led and equipped than had ever been seen on the planet.
He was however declining into syphilitic dementia and as a result, paranoia, which led to a great mistrust of anyone so much so that his behaviour became erratic but there was nobody close at hand to keep him in check.
If Hitler had been either well or executed then there is little doubt that the war would have been much longer ( due to the fact that his generals would have fought only to their logistical limits ) but it's not likely that they would have lost with or without the late intercession of the Americans.

Hitler never wanted to invade England, it just was never part of his plan. The English were as close to brothers to the Arians as he could imagine. He just assumed we'd be happy to take France, Spain et al in order for him to gain his real goal of regaining Prussia then the Balkan states because the whole motive for the expansion was for natural resources such as oil being that modern Germany had little of its own to sustain its growth.. I've got

crossfire ( sli ) HD3850's in this and could go quad now but there is no real reason. two 21" cad monitors to work on and an LCD 32" in the corner of the room for TV ( linked as a 3rd monitor for DVD viewing and the like ) is more than enough for me )
The computer in the other room with the 28" LCD is something I hardly sit at, I certainly can't photoshop on it, too shitty an image )

in the main I'd be using it for "an thing per screen" as it were so the ultimate resolution is less important than the number of screens

stretch across screen so a large resolution is not what I'm after, as you say, it's having multiple applications open that matter. And I've just been looking I can get 2048X1536 on a single. I'm sure I can get a great deal more on a big LCD in HD mode. That's not something I've tried yet.

but i'm pretty sure your cards'll do 2560x1600 or so per head

unforunately... the price you pay for them (in general) isn't an indicator of what resolution they'll do :D

you are up against having pinpoint resolution on crt but with big break up ( from the cases ) between screens or sacrificing picture quality for LCD to get a video wall. To be honest the cost is not worth it when a projector will do the job.

depending on the use cases the borders either do or don't matter

I'm certain completely seamless is available but the price will be in take the piss territory

there's always multiple projectors for a video wall of course but then there's the multiples of calibration that has to be done

it's one of these things where if you really need it, you need it, as it were, I'd be happy for a few lcd's on this desk because the crts just take up too much space I don't do any graphical work where absolute accuracy matters that much and the eda stuff I want to do I know I'll be able to get away with

and I do like a good display but there is a point where I have to be practical because at the end of the day apart from a few accounts and invoices I do no work at home on a PC.
I'm just not a fan of LCD for computer use ( and that includes the best Samsung screens you will find available today ) I have a large desk and room to extend it ( it used to be 14 feet long in my last place ) if I need it so big CRTs still have plenty of toom for all my other shit and beer cans.

I do have an old Sanyo projector that I've been meaning to try when I get a new bulb but I have a family that keeps interfering with my geekery.

one or two that are highly specious and may not be publishable depending on how cleverly we write the paper, then one that'll be utterly fantastic when it works and will be truly and funamentally ground-breaking, then a few that are interesting and worthwhile and in principle actually observable. and therefore less interesting. :)

i'm quite chuffed,it was a very worthwhile visit. it'll be a busy next few months but i think it'll be a very good next few months.

i do sometimes wish i could churn out papers at your kind of rate though.

instead i've chosen to work on controversial fields, which gets me a reputation amongst those who actually bother checking the archives rather than just writing shit and citing themselves (about five people worldwide) as being a dangerous person to employ if you want a good image for your department, and also some very angry emails from people whose feet i tread on.

set up the Bill Gates foundation to deal with it, one of the recipients of this generosity was the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine who were not only the first such school in the world, but are recognised as the highest authority on such diseases and consults shows such as ER and House when their plotlines require it (presumably make a fair whack from those shows too)

i think two of the reasons so many people got shafted was because in the early days they didn't think that it'd become as big as it did so accepted lower deals than they would now, and in later years the companies and people didn't have much alternative than to accept the measley deal microsoft offered.

And ultimately if DOS was as sucky as everyone pretends and if UNIX was the dream operating system that everyone claims, the world would be running on UNIX or BSD and everyone would be paying a fortune to a company spun off from one of the big American universities anyway.

/Runs a Windows/Arch Linux desktop, Mac OSX Macbook and SuSE Linux at work and has struggled wtih the utter hideousness of administering networks hanging off Solaris or SGI IRIX blog. Fucking Windows 2008 would be a dream compared to those, and I'm willing to put a very large amount of money on that.

ibm needed something that worked that didn't make the pc's compete with the minicomputers, it couldn't be "too good" (tho it did pretty much kill off the minicomputer or at least blurr the meaning of it)

"adequate" was absolutely ideal, a simple system for a machine with 64k of ram (and I'm not sure it had that much) and a 4(?)mhz 8086, ibm could have made the hardware a lot better but that would have been a bad idea for their marketing, plus of course even then the base pc was a good few thousand dollars when it came out

thing is tho, dos is good enough (you could probably get away with running a business with it even today) and there's an absolute shitload of software for it (y2k issues notwithstanding)

besides, theres no point wasting time making things absolutely perfect when you can sell good enough, though might explain some software quality issues generally, never mind just microsoft

but it really does make no difference, we'd still be where we are today with computers irrespective of who was making the most money out of it.

/runs windows & linux and still has a dos machine for it's particular use and is just happy that anything even works at all because it all has a mind of it's own and just takes the piss when you need it to work the most :D

yeah i totally agree

DOS was hardly the greatest thing ever, even by version 7 let alone version 3 or whichever piece of crap I first used. But it worked and it was relatively cheap -- as sick with myself as typing that has made me feel given the stupid cost of Windows. But it did what it had to so why waste another year of man-hours making it perfect if it worked so long as people didn't mind shutting their computer down once a day?

And compared to the user-friendliness of UNIX which feels like being kicked in the balls by fifteen Nazi guards, DOS is like being tickled by an inadequate lover. :)

/Has no computer that will run DOS anymore but does run DOSBox so he can sometimes play Warcraft and Grand Prix 2 and Elite II and other games from his wasted youth blog.

a (typical for icl) well designed system.. *cough*

but it's got an eprom programmer on it and the software is too shite to work on anything faster, I think the 386's too fast for it to be honest :)

tho £100 or so gets me a programmer that'll program about 4 times as many memories and do other things

I'm just loathe to throw out working hardware really :D
