Now this page is being used abit more, I'll 're-suggest' something.
A Tutorials section

We have an FAQ, which is great, but for some techno-numpties (I fully include myself in this) sometimes seeing the words 'html code' can strike fear into the heart of any grown man who isn't fully internet savvy.

To add to this, sometimes when the /board gets a bit heated there's lots of 'FAQ/Optimise it/Use scanlines/make it a gif'* (delete as applicable)

- which some new users (and a fair few of the old ones) may not know how to do.


Basically, it's a suggestion for a 'one stop tutorial shop' on the site, where helpful advice could be put up for reference. Many fine b3tans have produced tutorials for optimising, scanlines, illustration and photoshopping techniques and time saving ways of using image software, so it would be nice to have that on the site as a 'one stop resource' for all to use and get helpful info. from.

You would probably find a fair few people willing to lend a hand producing tutorials and guides for a range of things. In fact, set out some template pages which we could use, and make an image challenge of it. Helpful to all, and with piccies (maybe incorporating some unique b3ta humour into it as well!). The most popular in terms of info, guidance and being able to be 'easy to understand' then go in a new and improved tutorials sections, and which self-respecting b3tan wouldn't kill for a place in a new section of b3ta?

Obviously if people are intending to post reasonably big tutorials as part of any image challenge, then maybe a word about making a thumbnail and linking to it, and how to do it, wouldn't go amiss either :)

Currently on /talk we have a bit of a problem with idiots, many of whom are streetwalking prostitutes, deleting entire threads, which causes great annoyance to those of us who do not have anonymous sex in cars for a living.
Could deleted posts be replaced with the words "deleted post" and allow the rest of the thread to remain?

Make it so that the top three people on the board stats aren't allowed to post the next day
This will have a positive effect in a few ways:

- the board doesn't get dominated by someone just because they post a lot

- the people who post a lot will have to go outside and so will feel better about their lives, thus improving the quality of their future posts

- people will avoid posting superfluous *ningles, I'm eating eggs* crap

- people who have posted tons in the last few days will start to hold off unless they have something really funny to say

Shorten /talk
I'd like to suggest that the number of recent threads on /talk is cut down- I think at the moment it shows something like 15 recent threads, which really is a bit OTT nowadays. I know when /talk moved slower it was possible to have a conversation until it fell off the board, but now anything below the halfway line is just extra loading time. I think 5 threads is more than plenty to show the last couple of hours- anything older than that should be pushed to the next page.

QOTW: The week before Valentine's day
I think that in the last full QOTW-week before Valentine's day, it would be a good idea to have the "Your Brutally Honest Lonely Hearts Advert" question (without the 40-word limit) as the weekly question. IMO, this question encompasses the spirit of QOTW - sharing our darker side amongst a bunch of like-minded individuals. Before '/all' was disabled, that was the suggestion that was the most popular.

who is prepared to produce a small tutorial on any image manipulation topic might help new members
get to grips with photoshop, animations etc. Little tips, tricks etc, instead of trawling the net for help and guidance,

Alter the way the delete button works,
so that the contents of a deleted post are replaced with something like "This post has been deleted" rather than just having it disappear and take all the replies with it.

Or, for a laugh, make it so that the 'deleted' post is completely unaltered, but locked against any further editing.

There are loads of b3tans who sell stuff - from t-shirts and posters to body parts*, it'd be cool if there was some way to see what's being pimped by b3tans in one place, even if it's just a page of links (although a proper B3ta gift shop would rock).

I know this is a complete non-starter, but I'm going to suggest it anyway...
I love the way that on the Main board people can add artwork they've produced even if it's not for the current image challenge.

Now...what I'd like - being more of the writing squad rather than photoshopping gang - is a similar board for writing. I know we can stick stuff on qotw but broadly speaking it should be appropriate for the question.

It's no good putting a short story on the /talk board because...well...they're a bunch of mad sharks over there - as well they know it! ;)

I know there is no chance whatsoever of this happening. I know I'm also waffling.

But I've just finished writing a short story and sometimes it's good to be able to try it out on a critical audience before submitting it places. That said, if it's already had a public air many places won't take it....See, I said I was waffling.

Latest quite often means the latest and 90% of page (high num) so i have to scroll down the latest page, and page (high num) , just to get to page (hign num-1)

Creative Commons Non-Commercial licencing
Dear Rob and assorted b3tans,

It's quite common it seems for various entities (The Sun, Mail etc) to pilfer our hummus for commercial uses and for b3ta and the artist to not get any credit for it. I'd like to see all posts on b3ta covered by a blanket Creative Commons licence (which has a default Attribution clause) and a checkbox ON by default for the "non-commercial" clause.

It would probably also help for a b3ta.com watermark to be added automatically to each picture at display time to help with the attribution. Although we don't have an extensive legal team to pursue breaches of the copyright, I expect that media organisations would not be too keen to be seen in flagrant breach of copyright.

How about an automatic Compobot?
What it would do:

- Generate an hourly thread for compo entries.

- This would be the only thread where it was possible to select 'Image Challenge Entry' from the drop-down list.

Benefits:

- The board wouldn't move quite so fast on new compo day as they would all be in the same thread - thus preserving conversations, not pushing things off the board etc.

- All the reposts would automatically be in an existing thread instead of a new one.

- All the grumpy buggers who hate the compo could just hide the thread when it appears or put Compobot on ignore.

- A button to the Links Board on the FP (at the moment you have to go via the Main Board)
- A proper 'b3ta Personalised Pages Google app' with the latest FP Image, quick links to the Main Board, Talk Board etc. At the moment the only 'Personalised Google Homepage b3ta app' gives you a link to b3ta.com and the text from the latest FP image
- A b3ta NSFW page, so all the naughty stuff (tagged as NSFW that we can't look at work) will be in one place for us to fwap over when we get home!
- A "Debate of the Month Page". Everyone will have the option of arguing one side or another of a debate for 3 weeks and people vote as usual with the 'I Like This' buttons. The two people with the highest votes at the end of the third week have one week to submit a final rebuttal upon which we all vote again on who we think has the best arguement.
- We could fund the 'Debate Page' through Telephone / Text voting, plus, over time, we could debate b3tan national and foreign policy and start a political b3ta party! Imaging "Labour, 18,841 votes....Tory, 16,638 votes...b3ta, 34,108 votes *cheering*"
- Then all we would have to do is invent a religion (I vote for Furtive to be our God and Teh Fear to be the Devil) and buy a small Island

We need a Sky News type campaign - "See it first on B3ta" where you get the 'i made this' tag as an optional seperate feed that filters out the rest.

any chance of tweaking the /links faq or suggesting something to try and eliminate the conspiracy/taking over the world stuff?

I used to like /links for the cool and funny vids which did the rounds. It's now just become a breeding ground for having a go at religions, belief systems, governments, scientologists, 9/11 and so on an so forth. Inevitably, it filters down to b3ta users having a go at each other and tempers flaring, which seems pointless.

Is there any way that all contributors to an FP could get it to appear in their profile?

The Queen and Carla Bruni swinging Nicolas Sarkozy that I animated is as much the work of God Save The Queen as it is mine (his original idea/shop, my animating of it) So it'd be nice if in this instance the FP award (which we all strive so hard for and adore) could go in both profiles.

I'm sure this isn't the first or the last time a joint effort makes the front page, so it'd be nice if some code was available to make it happen, even if it was hidden away and had to be requested each time.

Hey overmods, just to say I agree with absolutely everything that Legless already posted www.b3ta.com/questions/bugs_and_feature_requests/post65028/ (including giving him his bloody name back!). He's one of your most frequent posters and has been around for ages so speaks for all your 'old skool' QOTW answerers, like me. On top of that I've got just one suggestion about the subject of the QOTW. Again I totally agree with Legless, I've pretty much stopped posting cause I'm either struggling to come up with answers to a really narrow question or I've already answered a very similar question, so let us have control! I know you won't want to give this power up, so I suggest a compromise: take, say, 3 of the most popular suggested questions from the 'What should we ask...' section and come up with, say, 2 of your own ideas to make a shortlist. Then when someone posts an answer to the QOTW they are automatically given one vote to decide which of the five we have the following week (one vote per person, not one per answer though). Easy. The result is no more bitching about the question, people have an opportunity to put a weeks thought into their answer for the following question and you're guaranteed good stories as the people who have to actually post the answers will vote for questions they have good stories for. And if you're so damn desperate to have stories about dentists you can leave the shortlist the same four that didn't get chosen and just add a new one in case you managed to come up with five brilliant suggestions at once.

Pretty please? The QOTW is starting to turn into the bastard child of b3ta. All unloved and ignored when for my money its the funniest part of the site.

...on the QOTW, so stories like:

can be slapped by pedants like me.

Also a "Shut the f*ck up" button for repeated bullsh1tters on QOTW.

In fact, why not add a "Snopealizer" indicator which blatant urban legends can be tagged with the appropriate link to snopes. These can then contribute to a lie / gullibility meter for that poster so when repeat urban legend offenders post a QOTW story, a little icon indicating they are a known liar / idiot appears.

not mods, just editors with the power to remove obvious 'gc' links. this has been a problem for a while now, but seeing as links has become almost as popular (and at times as fast moving as) /board it's getting quite annoying to see 'keyboard cat three moons t-shirt' for the 5th time or b3ta.com/links/Man_accuses_cat_of_downloading_bad_porn . they could also have the power to mark posts nsfw or remove shock-sites. i know that some people have not seen a link before and don't mind, but perhaps removing duplicate posts might encourage people to look at the popular page before posting and slow the board down a bit.

On the 'friends' tab, could there be a way of filtering what types of posts you see?
When you click on the friends tab, you see ALL of what your friends like on b3ta, not just the pictures, but sometimes talk posts, QOTW answers and so forth.

Could there be a way of filtering this in your profile so you only see the types of posts from your friends that you wish to see? - e.g. Pictures only, /talk posts, /QOTW answers
etc or a combination thereof? - maybe a simple 'tickbox' in the profile to accept various types of posts from friends which have been clicked on

Sometimes when clicking on 'friends' there can sometimes be nearly a whole page of text before you see an image, if that's what you want to see.

It might help people narrow down the type of posts they wish to see from their 'friends' on b3ta.

Why was it 'secret' in the first place? and why has it been taken away without explanation? It's not like it put people off posting is it?

Why is it one rule for image comps and another for QotW? I know some grief was dished out because high-voted QotW suggestions apparently 'weren't being listened to' but couldn't the /all feature can be used for QotW only?

/all was a great thing...and I miss it like fuck. I loved watching people's posts 'climb the charts' as it were...

Perhaps a view to the /all page could be handed out as a passworded 'prize' for winning the QotW? - with the possibility of it being revoked if the privilidge is seen to be abused?

Or even made an option on your account details?

Or even become part of a 'premium' account? - for people who have made a donation?

Or you could just bring it back...and help everybody out.

but there are many like myself who are a bit sketchy with html, how about a small toolbar at the top of the message posting box, containing shortcuts for html to insert images, bold/strikethrough/smaller text as these seem to get used frequently. this might also save on the amount of redexing that occurs.

and possibly something that prevents glasscockage on the links board after, say, the 3rd or 4th time? maybe a pop up saying where to find it previously, because I know it's easy to forget to check

I know that the "I don't like this" button idea has been summarily rejected
but I think a "this is spam" button would be really great; require, say, five or more individual clicks before a post is deleted or hidden, much like any Youtube comments page. This way we can prevent longer thread replies to spam posts as opposed to genuinely good posts by the few good Samaritans simply clicking "spam" rather than posting "you suck lolol."

Once a QOTW closes, would it be an intolerable pain in the hoop to organise posts by number of votes? That way for really good ones we could have more that one page of "best" stories.

A "this person is racist" button
so instead of establishing the fact somewhat nebulously in big, boring threads on the main and talk boards we can just click a little button, everyone can vote, and then we can just cart ourselves over to /racists and see who is and isn't a racist on b3ta.

Convicted racists can appeal on that board and others can vote to remove them from the list.

We can also have a very simple "ignore racists" button in our profile to save ourselves the mental anguish of having to wonder how such unbelievably racist people ever got on the internet.

The racists who can not successfully appeal will also be sent occasional e-mail alerts requesting that they visit racism counciling websites and watch important films like Crash, Schindler's List, and Get On The Bus.

We've already tried berating these senseless, intolerant people with our words now it is time for bolder action. We can stop racism on the internet if we want to.

What about this?
There needs to be something done to stop QOTW regulars moaning each week about the choice of question. So the best way is to put the choice in their hands. But thats too open and a question would never get picked. So hows about the choice is halfway between the regulars and the administration?

I mean, its all very well saying that people need to look through the suggestions and click I like this loads, but there are so many pages on there its hard to wade through. How about each week, when the new one i picked, there is a poll in the top header with a selection of like 6 from the top suggestions. Then each week when 6 top suggestions are picked out, the vast number of people who read the weekly QOTW copared to the smaller numbers that visit the suggestions baord will be able to pick out a decent one? That way no-one can moan as the regulars are picking exactly which sounds best to them?

And by putting in a poll, i don't mean a full 6 suggestions, just a 5-6 word summary with a linkto the original suggestion...

"Private" thread branches.
Sometimes we want to talk about books and films, involving ZOMG SPOILERS other people might not want to see. How about being able to make a post "private" so that you don't see its replies unless you explicitly look at that post? It wouldn't be difficult to do as you can essentially already do it just by deleting a post and posting a link to it. So how about adding it as an explicit feature? Just add a tick-box on the message posting/editing page "Make this thread private".

Maybe "private" isn't the right word as everyone will be able to see it, they just won't have to if they don't want to. But I can't think of another word.

Also it would be nice if it didn't take you back to the main board every time you reply from a specific post's own page.

You know how when you sign up for a new e-mail address or other username someone always allready has the cool names? It never fails, no matter how clever and original you may think you name is, someone has allways snagged it. So I thought why don't we pick on the privalaged few that have the cool usernames?

My Idea:

Is it coming to /talk at any time? I might well have missed something about this but I think it would be a great addition to /talk.

Also would it be plausible that edited posts could be highlighted the same way as (or preferably slightly differently from) new ones?

There's no mention of a lot of the more recent features, like:

A 'NSFW' button under picture threads, and to avoid it being abused by one person using multiple clicks, a way to log how many different users have clicked. Might be a good little self moderation thingy to avoid the inevitable sacking for looking at goatse or some other type of nawtyness!

Anything getting above x amount of 'i like this' votes on the board to be given a bronze,silver or gold furtive. This would let people know if their picture is popular without having to say how many actual votes it has got (which I don't think would work as I doubt people would like seeing it when their picture gets 0 votes)

A block which makes it impossible to post images above a certain size.

To meet W3C accessibility guidelines, each page should play a different Phil Collins MIDI file from his brilliant back catalogue.

The ability to hide certain posts without ignoring
A main board link that shows only the pictures and no comments so I don't have to trawl through pages of 'crap' replies to get to the good stuff.

Wider front page pictures as 280pix is a bit small for some stuff.

an auto block for pics over 50-60k and gifs over 250-260k.

Able to browse a members posts with pictures only, missing out their comments.

A retrograde link to all pics that got an fp, so we can browse the wonders therein.

Can we have a "Save for Later" button?
Picture the scene: you're at work, and there's a long QotW post you want to read, or a video on /links that you want to watch, or something like that - but it's not convenient, so you decide to wait until you get home... where you have to trawl through pages of stuff to see what you want (if, indeed, you can remember what it was at all).

Could there be some kind of button near to the like/ reply buttons to act as a bookmark? You'd have a "saved for later" list on your profile of things from, say, the past week that you want to see, but haven't yet.

Does that make any sense at all? Would it require unreasonable amounts of coding?

Some sort of backwards clique
so that new people are allowed to post pretty much instantly, but that people who are likely to post "OMG FAIL" or "You'd better look out because everyone is about to flame you" (unless the new people just aren't getting the point) don't actually see them.

That way newbies would only be seen by nice supportive people for the first week/month/whatever and the only real way for people to join this "clique" is to just be nice to people.

How about a feature similar to the 'popular' button on the image challange, only on QOTW
When you press it, it arranges the post in order of popularity, rather than time posted.

Saves time trawling through dross before the 'Best Of' page is up, and it would allow you to keep track of how well your answer is doing.

Image challenge
I have noticed that the "Popular" section of any image challenge will rarely change dramatically after saturday.
I think it's because a lot of people (including me) look at the populars, then click some of the images, ensuring them a prolonged high rating.
Is it maybe possible to disable the "I like this!" button for the "Popular" section?
This could probably prevent that some really good images never get to the "popular" page, just because they haven't been posted early on?
Makes sense?

I know back in the dim and distant past and the hallowed beginnings of b3ta there was a radio show. Well now in this age of downloading podcasts in order to listen to stuff on our iPods and MP3 players is there any chance of having a podcast of some of the stuff featured on the site?

I still think there should be a
'see the most popular suggestions' on the image challenge suggestion board like there is on the compo itself. That way the good ideas would bubble to the top more easily and you could clear out a load of the dross at the bottom of the list on a regular basis.

I reckon this would make it more likely that people would look and vote on image challenge suggestions.

How about a "hide compo entries" option?
Some competitions elicit far too many crap entries, which swamp the board and push off some excellent work, so it should be possible to allow an option to not see compo entries. After all, you can always click the Image Challenge link if you want to see them.

I don't know about anybody else, but working for several hours on something only to see it shoved off the board in a couple of minutes by an avalanche of "Text On A Picture" images is really annoying/disheartening.

As most people view this, and the ones near the top snowball votes, where a lot of great ones further down the chain get overlooked.

Just the /links board.
Love it, best thing b3ta has done, and in fact my homepage. My account is relatively new, But pretty much been a member since day one under different names. And love to be here, and contribute to one of the best sites on the web.

But god, the /links board seems to be a funfair for anyone visiting youtube.
We all go there, and it's a real bore to see all these rubbish replies of 'GC', all the friggin time. It's like people are posting replies of 'GC', just to make themselves feel good!
But anyway, that's not my point.
My thought, is more to do with the same person posting several different clips and clogging the board with youtube.
So my idea is to perhaps limit posts to say, one hour between posts, that way we can actually see a board with more random links, instead of several in a row of youtube clips.

Grouping these would be so much better, as some of us only get the chance to see the board once a day, without having to click back to find older posts.

As well as an "I like this" button, have the "Donkey of the Week" linked on the newsletter too; a compo post so bad it improves other posts (plus we get a cheap laff if "Dave the Hat" wins the elusive Donkey).

Why not stop having an objective judge/judges to ascertain which QOTW/Image Challenge entries are best, and simply turn the judging over to the users of b3ta to vote. That way a self-appointed elite of time-rich, in-joke toting tossers can vote for each other and generally ruin what was once a pretty good forum for ze Ingleesh humour, turning it into (yet another) monstrous cabal of testerone sodden lard arses with little to do and less to say. This has always bugged me... you click on the QOTW page and it shows the Latest posts... then you click on the last page number to go see earlier posts, and it's all the same damn posts! Sometimes for more than one page. I'd rather see a Latest page with only one post than go to a different page and see no new posts at all.

In addition to 'I like this', QOTW & compo posts should have a 'This is not relevant' vote. Too many TINR votes and it's off the board!

I favor 'I like this' totals, but they should only show up for a) your own posts and b) posts that you click ILT on, so vote totals don't affect whether other people click but you can see how many others clicked before you.

Also, people who take a QOTW topic like "When did your childhood hero let you down?" and treat it like "Name a famous person you saw!" should be branded on the forehead with 'OT' for Off Topic.

QOTW is the best thing
I've ever seen on the net. I found it when searching for nasty jokes and was directed to b3ta's sick jokes. From there I found QOTW.

The people who respond to QOTW are completely insane. (In a good way) I have never laughed (out loud) so much. The archives are a gold mine of belly laughs.

My point in all this is that I am on the internet through "WebTV". A little black box giving me access using my TV as monitor.

Compared to a computer it is limited in what it can do. All I ask is that QOTW remains compatible for me to enjoy.

I have never lauged so much as when I read the stories posted there. Made up or otherwise.

Being American my vocabulary has grown considerably thanks to your British humor.

Any changes to QOTW that are small would be appreciated.

Feature request: Archived front page
Have a "Next 10" link at the bottom of the front page that shows the last 10 images that were front paged. Each archived page would also have the "Next 10" link (or whatever number you use).

Usefull if I go on vacation for two weeks and can't check b3ta while I'm away.

2) An audio board
3) A flash board
4) User defined image size limits, so the user can choose the largest jpg and gif sizes they want to be shown when looking at the board
5) Gradually reducing indent width for each level of reply, so the board doesn't get all squshed over to the right by the 20th reply to a reply to a reply to a reply.
6) An archive for the 'popular' page.
7) The ability to jump to a time in the Archive, so I can find that great image that someone posted at 6pm last thursday without guessing the archive number

Make it out of paper, make it out of pasta, sculpt clay, weld metal, put together lego bricks - whatever works for you so long as it's more than just a drawing and done off-computer. The "view older links" links on b3ta.com/links/ takes you back one page further than it should. Currently it takes you to b3ta.com/links/archive/4568/ but there's a number of posts too new to be on that page and too old to be on the main one. Those posts are already on b3ta.com/links/archive/4569/ which would seem to be a better target.

When I 'Ignore' someone, for instance baldmonkey, all the replies, which are sometimes amusing, are hidden. Instead I suggest that the ignored posts are replaced by a suitable message, say 'Post by xxxxxxx ', so that the replies are still visible. The 'Post by ' text could be replaceable with user supplied custom text so the entries would read 'Post by beakering retard baldmonkey' for instance.

Seeing as some people get really annoyed by reposts in new threads (and it can make the board fly by on a Thursday) the next time someone is updating the post a new message/image hosting wizard how about you add a tick box labelled "is this a repost?" which takes them to the html to copy and paste and instructions of how to do it for those new kids who don't quite understand. Plus how to tag it as an image challenge entry.

A list of QOTW / Image-Challenge entries by rate of clickage
At the moment, Image Challenges and QOTWs are sorted in popularity by the total number of clicks. How about being able to sort them by the rate of clickage (number of clicks per hour/day/whatever). That way, good answers that were posted towards the end of the QOTW show up too.

Location of event on the calendar
List the location separately, so you can easily see where the event is taking place. Also, would be nice if you could click on said location, and be shown all the other events happening there.

There could be an option not to display any pun posts for those that were against them, and for those that liked them, they could be displayed as usual, without spoiling the punny suprise.

I thought that, if you win the QOTW, and also have your answer on the newsletter, and have a qotw suggestion put up. Then you should be a QOTW Star, and get a little QOTW Star symbol put next to your name.

I DEMAND FEATURES
- A popular page for currently ongoing QOTWs, like what the image challenge has.
- When a QOTW/Image challenge has finished, don't just show the however-many-there-are most popular ones, rearrange them all in order of how many votes they got, as I'm sure there are good stories and pictures that don't quite make it onto the popular page.
- Make the search feature more user friendly.
- Have a "most popular posts of all time" feature for /board, /talk and /links.
- Ban everyone whose username begins with 'X', 'Z', or a 'Q' not followed by a 'U' because they're being tricky.
- When I log in I want The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy played.
- Achievement points.
- All Islamic holidays to be displayed prominently on the calendar, and anyone who doesn't sign up for them killed.
- The FAQ should include the question "Who you gonna call?" with the answer being, of course, "Ghostbusters!"
- If the newsletter can't be written for some reason it should be left for the /talk board to do.
- A b3ta branded range of personal hygene products.

I'm sure this has been suggested plenty, but why do all sub-threads attached to a deleted thread get deleted too?
Can't you just replace the deleted text or image with the words "THREAD DELETED BY HAMTOUCHER" and keep all the sub-threads intact? Please?

But how about when someone posts a picture on /board they are required to "Tag" their image for the search option.
There's a few times I've wanted to search for a picture and had to try to remember words from the original post to find it.
If we tagged our images with simple words like "cat", "cdc" etc it would help with searching.

Suggestions for improving QOTW
When reading through someone's QOTW answers and replies (using the "read all their answers" link) and I click on the page-icon (or ‘more’), if the reply is an answer, I'm taken to the answer and its replies, but if the reply is a reply to an answer, I'm taken to a page without any content (just the headers and navigation thingies). Would it be possible to change it so that if you click the page-icon of a reply, it takes you to the reply's context (the QOTW answer - possibly scrolled down to where the reply occurs)? This is useful if you see an interesting reply but are curious about the context.

It would be nice if the page-icon for answers was different to the page-icon for replies (e.g. one (or both) contained a letter - similar to /board competition-entries).

Perhaps there should be an option to hide replies and only show answers, or only show replies.

When viewing someone's profile and they haven't yet posted 5 answers, the "read all their answers" link doesn't appear so you don't get to see their replies.

When editing a QOTW answer, there should be a 'Preview' button.

Currently when there's a new image challenge, the old one stays open for a bit. Could we do this for new QOTWs as well please?

The web page for an individual QOTW answer and its replies only has "b3ta.com qotw" as the page-title. It should also include the name of the QOTW and the 'subject' of the answer.

On the b3ta front-page, as well as having the best of /board, there should be the best of QOTW. One place to put it could be the empty space underneath the advert for the Bumper b3ta book of sick jokes.

There should be a second QOTW running in parallel, which is basically an opportunity for people to post answers to previous QOTWs. Every week, five previous QOTWs could be re-opened in this second QOTW. These five QOTWs should have a similar theme so that the answers all have a certain theme to them (this encourages people to be more open than opening all old QOTWs at once because the stories will have something in common).

When editing a reply, I'm taken to the QOTW page instead of the answer-page containing the reply.

...and if enough people click on it the thread gets hidden by default. Say if 10 people click the thumbs down button.

I've seen this sort of thing on other forums.

This will reduce the need for mods to be constantly vigilant with regards to NSFW images.

Could we have an "I hate this" button? Ignoring people is all very well, but someone might provoke ire in one post, and then do something great in the next; it'd be a shame to miss that. (I'm reluctant to consign people to outer darkness.)

It'd also mean that, in the QotW, we could click "I like this" and "I hate this" to mean "Your story made me laugh, but, by God and all that's holy, you're an illiterate twat who really should learn to spell and/ or punctuate".

One of the things that causes ructions on the /talk board in particular
is the way that sometimes many threads will be posted in succession, and conversations that you're having disappear down the board. After all, you can't tell how many other people are typing a post at any time.

How about a system whereby you click 'post' as normal, but if another post has been entered in a certain time period (say one or two minutes) its appearance on the board is paused until the time has elapsed? I'd suggest a screen to come up notifying you that the post has been queued, maybe with a countdown as per the naughty step?
If applied to the image board it would also ensure that posts got at least 30 mins' exposure (if it's still 15 threads at a time). Bonus.

Two more things please; firstly, just as private chat messages and 'woo first' gloats are removed from the answers by the glorious overmods, could any post containing the words 'I've already posted this for another question but....' be removed please? If you've already posted it then the chances are everyone has already read it. I'm sorry if the greatest moment of your life wasn't deemed funny enough to make the best board last time you tried but thats usually a good indicator it won't be this time either.

Secondly, I'm sure theres a reason for this, but why not front page current popular/hilarious answers like current entries for the Image Challenge are? Does the front page have to be entirely images? I just think funny is funny regardless of the medium.

Being able to ignore a particular post
rather than having to ignore the user altogether.

I'm thinking this would be really useful when someone is a bit of a tit and writes a word that is so long it goes right off the side of the board. It makes scrolling down a pain in the arse, and it's not that uncommon on talk. And I'm sure it would have other uses as well.

Either that or just not letting words go off the side of the board somehow.

Collapsible threads
I like the idea of collapsible threads with an option to have threads collapsed or whatever the opposite of collapsed actually is; I'm going to with inflated as it was the first word to spring to mind. Would make for easier reading for me anyway.

The logout timer would be a good idea or at least something scary going on to prompt me to at least start the essay which is due in tomorrow morning. I foresee a night of frantic typing fueled by caffeine....

quite frankly, its such a small crowd that it wouldnt be worth it. i mean i wouldnt go to check the real photo and im sure there are many others in the same boat.

Keep RPS and dont fix whats not broken. Nothing stops you posting your own pictures in your own thread on a sunday. If you dont like what someone posts just ignore them and stop being childish :)

Horrible suggestions on this page:

Incorporating the QOTW with /talk. People who go to look at the QOTW probably don't want long periods of us talking bollocks in between stories, and I'm sure /talkers don't want to be continually interrupted with the day's seventh version of some urban legend. I do like the idea of being able to reply to stories, though.

Limiting image size/format. I realise that some people still have shitty connections, but really, is it that awful to wait a minute or two before all the pics load? Once you've seen them once you've most likely cached them anyway, so loading the occasional 300KB monstrosity really isn't that bad. It can be a little annoying, yes, but I think it's worth it for some of the wonderful larger images we get. As for only allowing .gif and .jpg - why? In particular, why choose those two formats? .png is far better than .gif anyway.

Limiting the way that noobs can post is silly. I don't even like the L plates much - I think it makes new people too obvious a target. I would suggest removing them again. I've certainly noticed that noobs who wait until their plates are gone before posting tend to get a far less harsh reception than those with L's intact. Adding further limits will only serve to discourage people from joining in, and I'm sure that nobody wants that. I don't really understand the idea behind only letting them post after getting a certain number of replies - most posts, even harmless or interesting ones go unreplied to. In fact, it's generally inflammatory or offensive posts that get the most replies - this only makes the system harder on genuine noobs while inconveniencing trolls not at all.

I think an "I don't like this button" is quite a good idea, but awarding icons (such as a dunce hat) would only encourage people to try and get it.

Seeing the number of people who've viewed your profile and have clicked "I like this" also seems OK, but seeing who it was who has voted for you is surely bad, as it makes people feel they have to reciprocate. Far better to just have people clicking based on how much they actually like a picture or story.

1. Limit picture file size on upload: 150KB for gif, 50KB for jpg. Don't support other image types, except perhaps png.
2. Do not allow a new post unless it has an image in it.

Being able to see old FPs would also be nice.

I would like to understand the board please. I think I possibly in that minority here called "technology spastic" but for me refreshing the board just makes it totally confusing :(

redesign frontpage to allow 600px wide images
400px is a bit tiny these days when even the smallest of monitors and laptops has at least a 1024px wide screen res (and I remember when 400px it was a huge improvement over what we had before).

And while we're at it, why not start a month-long compo to allow users to redesign the FP themselves to spec? I'll be happy to code it for free (HTML, CSS, Javascript and some PHP).

If the person respossible is not intending to fix the search function at all, could they please possibly just tell us and perhaps just remove the button that says search?

I choose not to display my donation icon, but do have several, (Any Mod can probably check this in my profile) so if it's a matter of funds to pays someone to fix it, you could release a new icon to pay for it, I for one would be glad to chip in a few quid (Even though I choose not to display it) as I'm sure many others here would be too.

You know how there's a QOTW poll? Why can't there be one for the potential banning/stepping of a poster, so that if some crybaby prick runs to the mods about someone who's generally found to be entertaining, there's a last chance of reprieve? The London Bash date has changed for a second time. The first time I noticed this was when it got a mention in the newsletter. I initially felt I must have put the wrong date in but was fairly sure I'd check something like that. Today it's happened again though. I've tried editing but it still remains on the 27th not the 26th.

Add extra filters for youtube auto-embedding.
Now twitter/youtube is all about the youtu.be shorter version and loads of videos posted to links don't embed, also some people use an embedding url which stops it embedding.

eg: www.youtube.com/embed/M46wDXbHE3k

So maybe you can add a bit to convert these to 'vanilla' urls or make them embed like normal in whatever way regular urls do.

How about the L-plates stay on until you've had a certain number of likes rather than the timer which won't get them if it's an unpopular QOTW and certainly won't for while people are still newish.

How about a spam button next to the posts of anyone who has posted less than, say, ten times. If more than X people click it, then the thread can be hidden and the user's account blocked until a mod validates it.

Currently if I like something, I can come back and look at the posts I liked. But it seems that only with talk posts, that they are isolated, and cannot be viewed in the context of the thread.
Pictures, links and qotw posts all have the 'a4-page' icon next to them, allowing you to view the post in the context of the entire thread, but talk posts do not display this.

Can you make it so that if somebody gives a link
embedded in the text to something else on b3ta, that it strips off the "http://www.b3ta.com" or "http://b3ta.com" (or other well know alternative names) from the start.
So <a href="http://www.b3ta.com/questions/bugs_and_feature_requests/">linky</a>
becomes <a href="/questions/bugs_and_feature_requests/">linky</a>

This means that if we are accessing b3ta via one of the other sub.domain.names, then it stays on that domain, instead of linking back to www.b3ta.com which gets blocked by our firewalls and proxy server filters.

Moderation
Can anyone explain how the various boards are moderated?

I've seen spam posts edited by mods and occasionally some personal details removed from malicious posts(phone numbers and emails etc) but it doesn't seem coherent to me.

This is not a criticism, I enjoy b3ta as it is, but it would be nice to know what to do if a user feels that a post is unpleasant enough to be considered for moderation and what if any the remit of acceptability on b3tas various boards is.

How abouts the best "I made this!" videos from the links board are put on the Front Page, maybe an embedded video or some such in the usual FP column, or in some other cubby hole off on the side? For most screen resolutions now days it would seem that b3ta has quite a bit of space either spare or not very crowded, so overcrowding oughtn't be too much of a problem.

It may also promote people to make their own videos, which would be nice to see and would make /links more interesting to visit, also lowering the risk of seeing the same youtube video enough times that it becomes of same fame as the fabled GlassCock.

Putting good videos in the newsletter is all fine and dandy, but it only happens once a week or so and then it's something special, that's put to one side, and not a usual part of everyday b3ta happenings. Putting good videos as part of the Front Page would normalise it somewhat and promote the concept a little more.

A perfect candidate for this, in my opinion, and also to support my reasoning for why, is:

How come there's not a popular page for QOTW?
Always wondered this. The QOTW fills up so quickly that it's scarcely worth ploughing through page after page of gibberish to pick out the gems that invariably crop up, and it kind of devalues the point of clicking 'I like this' to anything. There's popular pages for /board, /links and the image challenge, so why not set one up for the QOTW, so people can just flip straight to the good stuff?

'Spotted' (basic idea)
Occasionaly I get a gaz that an image of mine has been spotted somewhere. Usually the copyright footer has been cropped off or altered, meaning I can legally threat someone, which is always fun.

That's why I though of this suggestion. You could come across something and you think 'oi, that originated from b3ta', and post it.

It was better in my head.

In the search it appears you can only search for a users posts by knowing their unique number.

It would be useful to have a name search, i.e. search for all users beginning with "barb..." or something, and then a clicky link to search for their posts.

Suggestions for improving the 'friends' facility.
There should be an icon in front of a person's login name if they are a friend, fan or both. Currently, on /board, /talk, and /links, there's just a bit of text afterwards, and on QOTW, there's no indication at all. An alternative to an icon would be to change the link-colour and visited-link colour. For example, normally, it would be blue and purple (like it is now). If the person is a friend, it would be green and brown. If the person is a fan, it would be light-blue and light-purple. If they're both a friend and a fan, it would be greenish-blue and dark greenish-blue. Another alternative is to just change the text-background colour of the username using the CSS ‘background-color’ property. Perhaps this could be extended to show if a user is also a b3ta moderator.

On the ‘friends listing’ page, there should be something to say if they're also a fan (perhaps use one of the ideas mentioned above). Likewise for the ‘fans listing’ page (although the radio-boxes currently indicate this on the fans page).

On the friends' activity page, if a friend replies to a QOTW answer, this should be mentioned too.

When viewing the QOTW, if an answer has a reply by a friend, there should be a little icon next to the 'replies' link to indicate that a friend has replied.

Image elements challenge
I reckon it'd be cool if we had an image challenge whereby a certain amount of images say 6 or so are selected each week from which users must create their own single, funny image. The images to be used could be selected in the same way as QOTW's with a suggestions board containing low file-sized versions of images people think would be interesting to use which can be voted on each week.

Calendar Invites
I don't know if this has been suggested but here goes:
When setting up an event in the calendar, maybe include an option to send invites to individual b3tans, so they're aware of the event and can accept or reject the invite. Maybe link it to the Friend's thing so you can send a mass invite to everyone you have befriended or those who have add you as a friend.

Would it be asking too much for them always to be shown in order of popularity, or to be able to choose which format you prefer? Feature request - I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest this but -
There are some really good stories on QOTW. Not the "I got drunk and - - -" stuff which is sometimes amusing but gets a bit wearing after a while. But I'll mention a couple I recall - the woman who gave her 20 something grandchildren dolls and a toy ray gun for Christmas, the man who took revenge on former employers by a delayed fuse "bomb" in their computer system and the woman who answered a ringing public phone at random and found the call was for her. Some hilarious, some baffling. Has anyone among the respected moderators of this august site collected a file of these? It could make a great separate page or several and it might even make a book.

Also, does clicking on '1 Reply' (or whatever) have to take you to a new page? Couldn't it be a minimise/maximise kind of thing? So replies are automatically hidden (or automatically shown, with your preference set in your profile) but there is a 'Show replies' option?

to have a message sent to your gaz inbox when someone posts a reply to one of your messages? Or to have another link which says "You have X replies" which you can click and it takes you to your posts?

Otherwise you have to check your posts every so often to see if anyone's posted a reply.

I think that's how it works anyway, as no-one's replied to one of mine yet :-(

Oh, and what about removing the "Post Your Own Story" link from the reply page, as it infers you are posting a reply, when in fact it's producing a new QOTW board posting. I know this now, having made the mistake once, but it's not immediately obvious.

Other than that, this new feature is great. I love it. Praise be to the great b3ta code johnnies.

A way of hiding threads without logging in
When I'm at work, the only way I can see b3ta is to go through www3.barnesy.org - this means that I am unable to actually stay logged in. I need to log in every time I need to post a message, and then I can't edit it etc.

Is there a way I can hide a thread which might be of a giant magenta cock or a lady in a bikini? I don't really care about these things when I'm at home (and have the ability to hide threads) but when I'm at work I have to leave for an extended period whenever there's something like that on the board.

Can we have a QOTW vote-o-meter?

Specifically for when we all get bored of it or it's not that enteretaining - it can be as simple as an alternative to "I like this".

When it gets so many hits, the QOTW is closed and a new one opened.....

Suggestion
Do you know what would be useful? A "Zoowatch" or "Nutswatch" section of B3TA. Like the Popular section, but specifically for images that have been ripped off by Zoo, Nuts, McDonalds etc.

Let's face it, some of us may wish to pursue these matters if our stuff has been pinched. I know this is a nebulous area if you've used public domain images as a source, but if you've used your own art or photos you may have a case...

THE B3TA Graphic/Written Novel IDEA

first off there are no set rules for any of the following, if anyone has a better way of doing this by all means suggest it - and let me be clear this is not my project, it is overseen and managed by everyone who contributes - (but we might need a quality control panel?)

I'm getting loads of feedback and good ideas on this - at the moment it's all in my inbox - so I thought the next step was to set up this place, as a way of letting everyone gather in a forum to discuss ideas:

THE WHAT:
This is for a B3ta Graphic/written novel where each of us submits 1 page each - even those B3tans who can't illustrate can just submit a page of text or dialogue - the only criteria is that each page creates a narrative flow from the one previous - 1 page could even consist of just 1 panel - much like in the spirit of the joke book.

The end result is a graphic/written book with completely unpredictable storyline illustrated and written by a wonderfully diverse group of creative individuals

THE HOW:

I messaged Rob about this idea, to give him the rights over this project, which is only fair, but he said he had no problem, for anyone who's interested in doing this, to do it on our own even though we're using his site

the tricky part - I suggest we employ a queueing system - have a site/storage area where the pages are submitted. Here the last page submitted is picked up and a lock put on the pickup area until that person submits their continuation page and so on...

THE WHAT THEN:
when the story reaches a certain number of pages (96?) we publish (lots of ways we can do this and i'm open to ideas and feedback). If we keep submitting pages we just simply run on into other volumes - maybe 4 per year?

I'm guessing from the responses I've had so far we will never be short of enthusiasm, talent or contributions.

Even if only B3tans and their friends/family/gimps buy the book it will still shift a fair amount of copies

even if we don't publish we could have a downloadable PDF version of each book volume, at the very least - guaranteed


If anyone has ideas on this or a better way of doing any of the above by all means let us know

THE WHY:
Just for the fun of it

I doubt this will make any of us any money but as most of us are doing creative stuff on B3ta for free anyway, I doubt this will stop any of us from chipping in on the project .

The NOW WHAT:
