- The compo suggestion page should be cleared weekly.

- it should have a 'see the popular posts' clicky, like the compo pages themselves do.

- The compo should be chosen by vote.

- anyone can enter the compo

And, definitely this:

# have compo suggestion week theme.
we get a narrrow batch that way.

# I have a feeling you may be right :\
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:37, archived)
# that's why I think there should be
an hourly thread to allow compo entries. That way it's easy to hide the thread if you hate that week's compo.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:40, archived)
# You could always not go onto b3ta
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:44, archived)
# True
but I like b3ta. Seeing as Fraser asked Prodge how to improve the compo, I thought and came up with something that I thought would win all round. I wouldn't bother hiding the compo post but I wouldn't have to keep spazzing back to older pages when 150bazillion compo entries all got posted in new threads one after the other.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:48, archived)
# Fair point
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:51, archived)
# perhaps the answer is to announce the compo on wednesday but not open it til friday
thus slowing down the torrent of "shit i've got an idea i'll bang this out quick" entries
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:53, archived)
# Hmmm. Possibly
as long as they don't save them up.

Mind you, that might work as well. Friday would be come in, do some work, have lunch, look at newsletter, go home.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:58, archived)
# ^
:)
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:49, archived)
# It's not me that hates the compo
It just seemed a reasonable way to keep everyone happy. Prodge can just click 'hide' once an hour an never have to see another compo entry as long as he lives.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:52, archived)
# How about we hang the people that complain?
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:55, archived)
# FP or popular?
That'd stop me from entering.

# you could enter on a post count wild card.

# I think it's fine the way it is.
All image challenges throw up rubbish ideas, but also some real strokes of genius.

This hasn't been one of my favourites, I must admit. There doesn't appear to be much of a challenge on the surface, and not much originality.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:40, archived)
# I think
what annoys me most is tha amount of repetetive, no effort, no talent shit that gets posted. They all tend to be in a new thread which zooms anything good right off the board. I still like the idea of an hourly compo thread being the only place to be able to post compo entries.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:43, archived)
# I think you are being unsympathetic
a sizable number of people have no idea what is funny and what isn't (me included).

Especially here, the home of Asperger's on the net.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:47, archived)
# Hahaha.
I didn't think that suggesting an hourly compo thread would be quite such a radical idea!
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:54, archived)
# You missed a section
Where should the Image Challenge pictures appear?

On the Main board
or

(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:42, archived)
# fine and dandy
but the flow of replies to an image are what makes this such a fun and jolly place, a separate compo board would further dilute b3ta.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:46, archived)
# I never said you couldn't reply, just that the image challenge has its own board
like this one.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:50, archived)
# Something's not right here... ;)
I'm against this. The challenge is for photoshopping, just like /links has a challenge to find good links
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:47, archived)
# Nah
I think it should be part of /board.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who finally gave up lurking and decided to post because they had an idea brought on by a compo.

but at least that will show they are interested enough in the site to join in properly, not just post shit because they are bored at school.

# Or only allow people
with a /board post count of greater than 5000 or something to post in the compo. that should be long enough to weed out the turds who post for the hell of it.

Plenty of other message boards limit who can start a new thread. If any message containing a picture got an 'I Like This' button then anyone could post a picture, but not everyone could start a new thread with one. As soon as you get a picture on the popular page, you are allowed to start new threads or something.

I'm just waffling now, someone stop me.

# I don't think images quality is always related to post count
I like the open nature of b3ta - the problem is the compo, not the users
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:59, archived)
# Same here
But if the people who could start new threads were restriced, you wouldn't have so much crap flushing everything else off the board. Every now and then you'd get a compo thread and loads of people would post their entires in it as it was a related thread?

I did say I was just waffling.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:04, archived)
# that would only work if the i like this button was added to replies

(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:19, archived)
# OR...
Maybe do some sort of internet wizardry type stuff and set the board to automatically start a compo thread once an hour (or just have a mod do it) and it's only when replying to that thread that it lets you choose to make your post a compo entry?

That would keep them all in one place, allow people to post whatever crap they wanted, not speed the board up too much and be easy to hide for anyone who hates the compo!

IT'S THE PERFECT SOLUTION!

But will no doubt turn out to be completely impossible.
