Bit of a threadjack: Can any of you geniuses tell me the easiest/cheapest way to set up a .co.uk domain for a few months then not have to pay for it for the whole 2 years or whatever?
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:24, archived)

all you need is:
1 small cardboard box
roll of tape
glitter
glue
and some manatee whiskers!

# Hello.
They only get sold in yearly chunks. Of course, you could always borrow one for a while.

edit: they're dirt cheap though. You might as well get one for a year. I recommend ukreg.com
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:26, archived)
# I don't mind buying
the domain for a year, cos that's quite cheap. I just don't know how easy it is to upload the actual website and I don't want to get stuck paying for the sitebuilder thingy for a whole year, that's when it gets pricey.

I use ukreg for my afinkawan.co.uk domain. I don't mind paying the few quid a month for the sitebuilder on that as I actually use it. this is just a rush job for a mate's wedding details and won't be needed after the end of October.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:28, archived)
# OK so.
You will need:

To register the domain. ukreg are super good.
Some hosting: you can buy a cheap hosting package somewhere, or if you have servers then you can set up virtual hosting and use them.
ukreg do some cheap hosting packages, but I don't know anything about them. They could be good, they could be crap.

edit: perhaps you know someone who has a server you can use, if it's just for a temporary low volume site.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:31, archived)
# Oh well.
It was the hosting I was hoping to get cheap/free/only for a couple of months.

I don't think I know anyone with a server. Hmmm.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:32, archived)
# I've not looked at this myself yet...
But apparently you can get free hosting, domain name and e-mail when you sign up to MS office basics.....

It may be totally crap and not what you're looking for at all, but just throwing it out there

office.microsoft.com/en-GB/officelive/default.aspx
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:39, archived)
# I'll have a look, cheers.
but Microsoft giving something away for free....? sounds a bit dodgy.

# I'll give it a go

# just the domain? 1&1 are only £2.99 for the year
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:29, archived)
# It's actually the getting a webpage on there bit
I don't know how to do. Is it easy? If so I don't need to pay for their site building software for the year.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:32, archived)
# it depends on the hosting package.
Most people will let you upload by ftp.

If it's a unix server you can use scp to copy your stuff across (use winscp).
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:34, archived)
# I don't know what any of that means
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:36, archived)
# Well if you're able to code the site yourself
on your own PC, then you can copy across the files to the site you get with your hosting package. Most hosting packages will give you a way of copying the files across. Those are just two methods.

So look for some cheap hosting that meets the needs of the site you want to build, and look out for any mention of how to upload your content. If you can use FTP or SCP or it has SSH access, then you'll be sorted
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:43, archived)
# Right.
Making the website on my own pc I can do.

I'll have a look, ta!
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:45, archived)
# Here you go
www.fasthosts.co.uk/hosting/linux-home/

That seems quite good at £4/month. You also get a .uk domain there.

You'd be able to use WinSCP to upload your site.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:49, archived)
# host it on your own server
and simply set the redirection address to the first page.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:34, archived)
# It sounds like a server
would be more expensive than the hosting package.

ALthough 1&1 do look the cheapest if I'm stuck with a sitebuilder package.

# Yes
This is very good advice. I thought of doing that when I uploaded the image (I actually made it a while ago but never posted it), but then couldn't be bothered to go back into Photoshop because I feel like someone has stuffed most of a large melted cheese up my nostrils, which has cooled to a tacky mess and is making its way back out in awkward and disgusting increments. Some of it may also be lining my throat, but it's obviously long out of date because every now and then I can taste it, and it's vile and is making me want to puke.

/man flu

Thank you for the advice, I like this image enough to probably get around to doing that at some later point :)

Edit: originally it was going to be a wall rather than just a thin rip, which is why it's like that, but I obviously got distracted with other ideas and never stood back to notice

you seen the Crows/ravens/black coloured Birds in Japan that use the passing traffic to crack nuts and wait for the green crossing man till they go pick up the pieces so as not to get run over?
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:12, archived)
# That's more evolution
and natural selection than being smart.

All the birds that crossed when the man was red died and so couldn't pass on their genes.
The birds that preferred to wait for a green signal lived and bred.
Soon all the birds in the world will only move when a green stick figure is visible. It's the future.
(, Wed 26 Sep 2007, 12:23, archived)
# It's a learned skill rather than a genetic trait, though.
It may well be that the birds that use the cars to crack nuts are more intelligent, thus they survive to make more birds. What will happen to them if the sequence of the lights change or we run out of oil is another matter.*
