I would not be without 2 monitors.
I play games on my big Toshiba and I have a 28" LCD on the other comp but for the one I sit at most ( this ) I have 2 trusty old CRT monitors as you can't buy an LCD that gives you anything like the same clarity. Having that extra workspace is invaluable for working with photoshop on one and having a browser on the other so you can quickly source images, read b3ta etc without leaving photoshop.

replacing that centre drawer so that the face is hinged and putting a slide shelf inside would be a piece of cake, but maybe not fair to the furniture.

It depends.
A good carpenter ( cabinet maker ) could do it sympathetically so that it would look identical and as long as the draw joints were not cut it could be put back to the original in no time.

and they are about 1cm off on the left but that's because the left one is off the desk and sits a touch lower than it. I could put it on the desk but that brings the left a foot nearer my head and I'd have to do all sorts of messing with the sounblaster surround setup to fix that.

Mine's on my desk
Because I have no room on the floor for it. I disconnected all the LEDs so they woudln't annoy me at night.

As it stands, I have to get out the air line and blow the mountains of dirt out. I'm in the process of waiting for planning to decide when I can build a house. I live in the dirt. Waah!

A computer on the floor
pulls in large amounts of dust and debris. On a desk, significantly less.
Also, PC in a cupboard = heat buildup = unhealthy PC, generally.

The desk I have cost
me £370 and the cupboard is designed for the tower. It has fan assisted airflow.
PC fans will pull dirt out of the air wherever they are and is dependent upon how much of a dirty fucker you are.
I had enough lectures in Uni regarding airflow and filtration. I don't need it on b3ta ;)

I have way too many...
...for this to be practical. And I have a wiiiiiide desk.
2 towers to the left of the desk on the floor and am old compaq desktop running the server sits on top of those. It's quite neat.
I have another at the other desk that sits on a plinth with feet to raise it a few inches from the ground but it is well away under the desk. Monitors and speakers on desks for me. I don't even want to see the keyboard and mouse, let alone the tower.

Anyway from my perspective I don't mind if the kit is on the desk, as long as I have plenty of desk room.
As for the floor debate, I'm with you on that. Just hoover, FFS.

The one on the other room is devoid of anything but keyboard, mouse monitor and pens in a little organiser because she uses it and keeps her shit tidy. It's very nice though ( desk ) I made it.
