Saw them off the Great Barrier Reef a couple of years back, swimming under the glass-bottommed boat. They transferred us from the big catamaran to the island in small, flat-bottommed boat that drove up the sandy beach before the front fell open and everyone piled off. I asked the two guys how many jokes they gets a week about it being a D-Day reenactment and they looked at me blankly as if they'd never heard of such an event.

apart from her.

she was far too precious about it all "i don;t see a pile of bones, i see a person" and she got all upset when the bone doctor said he had a hunch back.

and as for the flag over the box incident, please, even with the strong circumstantial evidence, it was a bit much.

i agree she did somewhat mar the programme.

I once watched an episode of Time Team where they went to the USA to where the Mayflower landed. The septics were horrified when they suggested bringing in a JCB to dig a trench. They had so little history to dig up they sieved the whole lot. Here in the UK you can't dig more than a few feet without finding a neolithic stove or some roman plumbing.

# Exactly this, they are a bag of mentals
The man was clearly horribly misjudged because people swallowed Tudor propaganda, but that doesn't mean we have to set up an international society and get deeply emotionally-invested because people might comment that our precious king was a hunchback. I loved the Dutch woman saying that that's a lie - when they were reasonably sure they had Richard's body and he was hunchbacked.

"I dont think she would have been tolerated had she not been paying for it all"

I thought exactly that, but unfortunately paying for it all meant they had to stick her being around and play along for the cameras even though they wanted to plant their pick-axes in her mush

# To quote an excellent John Grant song...
"Jesus hates pretty much anything you want him to"

I'm sure plenty of Christians ignore the one line in the new testament against homosexuality, especially as it is listed alongside being drunk as a sin in that particular list. If they have a problem with gay weddings, they should have a problem with anyone getting drunk at a wedding too.

I can't help but feel that the making out being gay is specifically at odds with Christianity when 90% of the modern world is at odds with some part of the bible, is fueling a lot of homophobia. The media likes conflict, but I don't think gays vs Christians is entirely true.

I wonder if the thing many Christians have a problem with is simply change. Ultimately, religion is going to be attractive to people who like tradition.

# To c&p something someone said on Facebook
which I thought sort of summed it up, I don't really think religion has much part in the whole thing: "the question comes down to whether you see marriage as a religious institution or a secular one. I don’t think, in reality, that we can say anymore that in this country it is a religious institution. The state recognises marriages made in many religious traditions and also marriages made without any religious tradition being involved. It is pretty clear that it is a secular institution. Therefore, the decision about what ā€˜marriage’ is shouldn’t be based on what anyone’s holy book says, but on what is best for people and for the state. Personally, I can’t see how you could argue that gay marriage is bad on either of those grounds, and it has clear benefits to the individuals who want to get married, so it should be allowed so long as no individuals or Churches who don't want to be involved aren't forced to be (which they aren't). There ought to be nothing more to the debate than that."
(, Tue 5 Feb 2013, 12:31, archived)
# Good point. I always thought marriage was religious.
But I suppose my mate and his wife got hitched in a non-god ceremony thing, so, yeah. Gays should be allowed to do that.

Just not religious marriage, or whatever (depending on whether or not that religion wants to marry gays, in which case I'd say it should be quite welcome to say either way).

# Marriage wasn't invented by Christianity, it pre dates it by thousands of years.
Also, in ancient Greece it wasn't uncommon to have same sex marriages.

But I have no idea why people want religions that frown on that sort of thing to marry them. Just invent your own version of that religion, that's what everyone has done historically because it's all made up bollocks anyway.
