You have no choice
They will be compulsory. Oh, they will tell you it's all voluntary and fluffy, but in a few years banks etc will give you funny looks for not having one and your life will be totally screwed when the database becomes tainted (actually, it will start out tainted as it is being seeded with data known to be wrong). You think getting the DVLA to acknowledge their cock up bad? That'll be nothing compared to having NIS admit they are wrong, non-person.

but, there are apparently no savings to be made by scrapping it
because the projected cost (~£3bn) isn't funded by the taxpayer - it's funded by...the public! a) £3bn is the apparent cost to the Home Office only. Nobody knows what it will cost to any other govt department (should any of them actually be interested) b) the public are generally taxpayers

wot professor undercover finks (for the very little it is worth):
1) terrorism, rather than being a significant threat to our democracy and way of life is a convenient was to make being a lazy politician in power easy 2) ID cards and databases are a significant threat to our democracy and way of life 3) the government can not be trusted with our details, this is equally true of the DNA databse which is, in theory, a good idea but would be stuffed up in practice.

I have loads of fun with this - my first name isn't my given name; my dad wanted to name me after his dad, my mother didn't, so my first name is my granddad's name but I never use it, except on forms... so: "what's your name Sir...?" "well - it could be one of two things" "No - it couldn't..." all that aside - I might not be fundamentally opposed to some sort of citizenship register, they already have so many of our details anyway a card's not going to make fuck all difference, but the reasons they give for needing it are the same tenuous ones they give for everything else there's a sinister ulterior motive for (*cough* Iraq *cough*) and I think it's due in no small part to having shoddy hopeless lazy spineless Home Secretaries... who let the police (who think everyone is a potential criminal) get away with fucking murder.

google internet explorer box model.
Basically, the silly n00bs at MS completely fucked up the box model displaying in IE, and mixed up where padding and margin go when positioning elements on the page. There's a work around involving switching your paddings for margins...or it might be margins for paddings. I forget. I tend to just use absolute positioning and avoid both padding and margins where I can. Stupid IE.

Probably because MS could get away with it?
It seems to have worked: a tit speak* it had 95% usage share . The fact that it's installed by default, and that it's the only one (AFAIK) that supports MS proprietary protocols like ActiveX, must have helped. And probably because it serves their interests? Think of it from MS's point of view: they only want to spend money on things that earn them more money. Adding proprietary protocols (eg. ActiveX) increases lock-in to Windows. In some ways, making a more broken browser increases lock-in too! ("Hey, our corporate website looks okay in MSIE, but looks wrong on others, so we'll require all employees to use MSIE). But making a better browser per se is not likely to make people pay more money to MS for copies of Windows! (People who care will happily switch to Firefox). MS do spend money on it, but they aren't very good at producing simple and efficient standards-compliant software. That's just not what MS is designed to do! If you're wanting them to fix it, I wouldn't hold your breath.*: some typos were meant to be left.

Well...
...and I DO hope you're not eating? There I was this morning, it's 2.30am and I'm in 'Slumberland', Meg makes the 'Daddy I want a wee and maybe a poo' whimper. I go downstairs, quickly turn the light on to check for any nasty little surprises. All clear, so It's light off. meg does a little squat and daddy thinks he's scooped her up in time. I'm on the back patio with just shorts and flip-flops on. She has a very little wee and a No.2. Back to 'Doggy Bedfordshire'. I put her in her basket and head for the fridge for a Lucozade at which point I stand in 'Meg wee'. Yuk! i was wondering how long before that happened! Still love her to bits though :) Sorry Yam, I thought you were imminent and on stand by for the 'Little one's' arrival. :)

indecently so
... are you getting a dog? you should do (if you like them) I like dogs as long as they are someone else's so that I can play with them but don't have to feed them or look after them... what's all this busyness about then? get someone else to do it - can't you see you're preggers and should be fed grapes and fanned with a leaf?
(

Already have a dog. He's a very lovely springer, His name is Snuppy :)
Busyness is because my house is a terrible mess and needs renovating before Bucket junior arrives. Poor Mr Bucket is too busy to fan me with leaves and feed me grapes. Want a job?

springer spaniels are lovely
they're in my top 3 favourite dogs with Irish Wolf Hounds (which are great at looking after babies and get on very well with other dogs hint hint) and Border Collies. When I first knew Mrs UnderCover her family had a lovely collie called Finbar and he loved me, which is a big part of why I think Mrs UnderCover's dad thinks I'm brilliant - aside from that I am brilliant and I like to drink whisky and listen to jazz with him.

Finbar is a splendid name for a dog.
I like collies, but I fear they are cleverer than me. Next dog will either be another springer or a beagle. His name will be Fraser (as we can't use that for Bucket Jr, on account of her being a girl and all...)

all I'm saying is
Fraser is a good name for an Irish Wolf Hound.

and with a wolf hound
you needn't be concerned about wolves... whereas Spaniels are mostly only good for keeping the Round Heads away...

well that didn't work for me... the doc is sending me to physio, and suggested a joint-injection

honestly, don't - stay off it. I badly twisted my ankle just before christmas (the sort of thing where you hear a *pop* and see the the sole, then scream like a little girl). I had to take a few days off as it hurt THAT much... I didn't see the doc at the time (first mistake), and it's been painful ever since as I haven't stayed off it (second). Now, i cannot physically jog, let alone run, and I have an idiot doctor who kept asking me when I finally saw him last week "what do you think is wrong with it" after I described in detail what happened and where it hurts.
